Maybe you are a young adult who has just been told you have a life limiting illness or a family member has received this news. Or maybe you have heard about Ending Life’s Taboo and want to find out more. Read on for some frequently asked questions and answers about our end of life support service. 

Who is your service for?

We offer rapid access to end of life counselling for young adults aged 18 to 45 who have been told they have a life limiting illness. Our service is currently available at both Colchester Hospital and Ipswich Hospital. 

How do I access your service?

Most people will be referred to us by their consultant, palliative consultant or GP although it is possible to make a self-referral

Do I have to sign up for regular sessions?

No. We will go at your pace and how much or little you use our service is totally up to you. 

Where does the counselling take place?

Sessions can take place in hospital, at home, over the phone or online – whatever works best for you. 

Are the sessions confidential?

Yes. We know it can sometimes feel difficult to talk to people you are close to, so our counsellors are here to help you share your thoughts and fears openly. 

My family member has been told they have a life limiting illness – will you support me too?

Yes. We offer support to family members when you need us, helping you to deal with the here and now. 

Doesn't this service already exist?

Before Ending Life’s Taboo was established there was no psychological support in hospital for young adults with a terminal or end of life diagnosis in North East Essex. Our rapid access approach means support is available quickly at a time when you need it the most. 

Doesn't Macmillan already provide this service at the hospital?

Macmillan does work at both Colchester Hospital and Ipswich Hospital however its remit is to work with those who have a curative prognosis. Macmillan is a supporter of the work of Ending Life’s Taboo. 

Doesn't St Helena Hospice work with terminally ill and end of life members within North East Essex?

St Helena Hospice does work within North East Essex however this is only with referrals and it doesn’t offer pre-death support in the hospital. St Helena Hospice is working with Ending Life’s Taboo and is supporting our charity to make this service available in Colchester Hospital. 

How can I support Ending Life’s Taboo?
